Carham Priory

Earlier this year a geophysical survey was carried out in the field at Carham between the church and the river. The focus was the site of the medieval priory which appears in the historical record but is no longer visible above ground. The survey was done by Durham University Archaeological Services and the Bernician Studies Group of Newcastle. A public presentation of the findings will take place at Branxton Village Hall on 28 November from 10.00 to 16.00. The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome, but please book your place so that the organisers know how many people are attending.

Musical Volunteer Needed

St Cuthbert’s church in Carham is looking for a volunteer to play the organ (a Yamaha electronic keyboard) at church services. There are two services a month, at 11 am on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, with additional services for Christmas and Easter, and once a year on a fifth Sunday. Playing at most services would be good, but it is not essential to play at all of them. If you or anyone you know would like to play in church, please contact Peter Straker-Smith on 07712 584 586. Belief is not required, and this could be a good way of keeping in practice, with a small but appreciative congregation!
