Christmas at St Cuthbert’s
A reminder about the Christmas carol service at St Cuthbert’s church, Carham, which is this Sunday 17 December at 11 am. This service is open to all people, of any faith or none. On Christmas day, Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) will be held at the church at 9.30 am.
Christmas Raffle
There are just a few days left to buy your tickets for the Christmas raffle – the last fundraising event of the year for the parish defibrillator fund. Tickets are just £1 each, and the prizes that have been donated should add nicely to anyone’s seasonal festivities. They include a magnum of Champagne, bottles of wine, whisky and sloe gin, boxes of chocolates, a £30 gift voucher for The Good Life Shop in Wooler, a basket of Christmas treats from Cornhill Village Shop and a sack of Saxon potatoes – an essential accompaniment to the turkey! – from Particularly Good Potatoes in Wooler. Tickets are available from Victoria Poland at Mindrum Station House, John McGregor in Wark and Willa Straker-Smith at Wark Common, and are also on sale at Cornhill Village Shop. If you have any trouble getting hold of tickets, please email carhamparishdefibs so that we can help you to get some. Ticket stubs and money need to be returned by Saturday 16 December and the draw is on Monday 18 December. Please support the raffle if you can!
Footpaths Group Walk Cancelled
Tomorrow’s guided walk around Mindrum farm has had to be cancelled, due to the weather. The back lanes are particularly bad in these freezing conditions, and there is a thick covering of snow over the farmland. The walks organiser hopes to re-schedule this walk when conditions improve.
Carham Priory
Earlier this year a geophysical survey was carried out in the field at Carham between the church and the river. The focus was the site of the medieval priory which appears in the historical record but is no longer visible above ground. The survey was done by Durham University Archaeological Services and the Bernician Studies Group of Newcastle. A public presentation of the findings will take place at Branxton Village Hall on 28 November from 10.00 to 16.00. The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome, but please book your place so that the organisers know how many people are attending.
Next Footpaths Group Walk
This is another chance to enjoy a guided walk around Mindrum farm with Tom Fairfax who will be talking about regenerative farming and other developments at this mixed organic farm, which the Footpaths Group last visited in 2019. The five-mile walk is on Saturday 2 December 2023 and starts at 10 am. Everyone is welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads. For more information, see the poster on our Walks page.
We would like to have some idea of numbers, so if you plan to come along please email the walks organiser or send a text to 07557 211 564. We hope to see you there!
Prize Bingo!
A reminder that the Prize Bingo evening is this Thursday 19 October at Cornhill Village Hall. This event is to raise money for the Carham parish defibrillator fund. Doors open at 6.30 pm and the Bingo begins at 7.00 pm. Bring your own refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there!
Flodden Cavalcade 2023
The annual ride-out to Flodden takes place on Thursday 10 August. A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order will be in place from 1015 hrs to 1800 hrs. The route of the cavalcade can be viewed here
Coming Up This Sunday
As we hope you know by now, we are holding a car boot sale plus classic car and bike show at Carham farm steading on Sunday 16 July. Admission is £3, with children under 12 free of charge, and the event opens at 9 am. Soft drinks, teas and coffees and burgers will be on sale for those who come along a bit later in the morning, and the event will wind up in the early afternoon. This event is to raise money for life-saving public-access defibrillators for communities throughout the parish. Please show your support by coming along. And if you’d like to help us raise more money, we’d welcome any fresh garden produce that you can spare, your fresh home baking, home-made preserves or any small plants that you’d like to donate. All of these will be sold on our plant and produce stall, with 100% of the proceeds going to the defibrillator fund. You can bring them along on the day, or we can collect from within the parish. Contact us for more information.
