Vacancy on Carham Parish Council

Carham Parish Council is currently in a position to co-opt a new councillor. This is a voluntary position. A councillor’s task is to bring local issues to the attention of the council, and help it make decisions on behalf of the local community. Training is available to assist councillors to develop skills and knowledge.

The Northumberland County Council and National Association of Local Councils websites provide prospective candidates with an insight into understanding roles and responsibilities.

Carham Parish Council meets six times a year, in alternate months beginning in May, on the second Tuesday of those months, in St Cuthbert’s Church, Carham at 6.30pm.

If you wish to be considered for this position please contact the Parish Clerk, Agnes Changleng.

Invitation

If you live in Carham parish, look out for an invitation that is being distributed to all households this weekend. This is for a special event on Monday 3 April 2023, from 7 pm to 8.30 pm at Cornhill Village Hall. The event is to tell you about the project to get life-saving public access defibrillators into communities across the parish. There will be refreshments and plenty of time for socialising with friends and neighbours, too. If you live in the parish but are not able to come along, please see if a neighbour can attend so that your community is represented. The event is being funded by Carham Parish Council. For more information, contact the Parish Clerk.

Rural Cost of Living Survey

Independent research commissioned by the Rural Services Network (RSN) last year shows that rural areas are suffering more acutely from the cost of living crisis than urban areas. To lend more weight to the argument for more funding for rural areas the RSN is calling on as many rural residents as possible to complete a rural cost of living household survey. The online survey is not difficult to complete and you can omit any questions that you do not want to answer. The RSN is part of the Local Government Association and is campaigning for fairer funding for rural areas. It has launched the survey in partnership with the Citizens Advice Rural Issues Group. Please forward this information to anyone you know who lives in a rural area. You can complete the survey by clicking on this link.

Holocaust Memorial Day

St Cuthbert’s church, Carham, is hosting a small display to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This takes place on 27 January each year and is a time to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which have followed in countries including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Sudan. The exhibition is one of thousands of local activities that take place across the UK and internationally to mark the day. The church is open every day and the display will be there until 3 February. Please sign the visitor list, if you go to see it.

Update: The exhibition has been extended until 14 February, to enable more people to see it.
